PADI Open Water Diver Certification

Overview

The Open Water Diver course is the full program to learn scuba diving and leads to certification. After you complete this course, you will be able to purchase or rent scuba equipment as well as dive without direct instructor supervision. PADI is the most recognized training agency in the world, and with this certification card (C-Card), the world of diving will be available to you.

Prerequisites

Minimum age for adult certification is 15 years of age. For Junior Open Water certification, minimum age is 10 years. Please consult with us for our policy regarding training for children below middle school age. Must be able to float for 10 minutes and swim 200 meters nonstop (no time limit).

Course Details

The Open Water Diver Course consists of:

  • Knowledge Development sessions (5 modules to complete): Home study with instructor led review of concepts important to diving. This can be completed with DVD and manual, then we will do a complete review of the important diving concepts before taking some quizzes and exams. Also, e-Learning, an online program delivered via the Internet, is also available. Please ask us for more details.
  • Skills Development sessions (5 modules) in a pool (confined water): Pool dives to learn and practice diving skills. This is held at a special scuba diving pool in the Tokyo area. The pool dives are held over a full one day.
  • Scuba dives in open water (Four (4) open water dives; two dives per day over 2 days): Diving in the ocean; usually at dive sites on the Izu penninsula (Beach dives at Atami the first day, Futo the second day) or in other locations upon request.

Scheduling Options

Executive Style Course

Complete Open Water Certification at your own pace; academic review sessions, pool, and ocean dives can all be arranged to fit your busy schedule. To complete the academic requirements, we will provide you with the knowledge materials to review at your own pace. Once reviewed, a single one-on-one academic session is all that is necessary to review the diving concepts you have learned, including quizzes from the book and a final exam. Sessions are normally held at the student's home or office or another convenient location, and we can complete the academic session with more than one person at a time. As a reference, many previous students took about 2-4 weeks to watch the videos/DVDs, read the book, and complete the bookwork.

After the academic session is completed, the remaining requirements can also be scheduled to suit your needs. The pool session is usually one day. For the ocean dives, almost all students choose to complete the required four dives over two consecutive weekend days in Izu. Should two days be impossible, we can offer a Scuba Diver certification card, a limited certification that allows you to dive only in the company of an instructor, if you complete only the first two ocean dives. This card will be issued if all four dives cannot be completed within one month of each other.

Although some schools charge more for this kind of personalized, individual service, we follow our standard pricing for this service.
