Driving Directions

Depending on where you are in Tokyo, you may want to get on the Shuto Expressway, which is 700 yen.  Or, you can take Kampachi to the Tomei Expressway in the morning since it isn't so crowded.

Take the Tomei Expressway south, exiting at Atsugi.  From Tokyo to Atsugi it is 1,250 yen.

From Atsugi, you get onto the Odawara-Atsugi  Road which is 350+350 yen at Hiratsuka and Odawara.

From Odawara, take the Ishibashi toll road which is 200 yen and  Manazuru Douro which is 310 yen.  Don't take the other route (Old Manazuru Douro) that only costs 200 yen because that way takes longer.

It is also faster to take Atami Beach Line, which is 250 yen.  You cannot use a Highway Card for this road, only cash or kaisuken.  You can buy a round trip toll ticket for 480 yen.

There are alternative free roads instead of taking the toll roads above.  But the fastest way (usually) is to take the toll roads because you can cut anywhere from 10-30 minutes off each route.

Continue south on coastal Route 135, down the coast towards Atami/Ito/Shimoda.

Keep driving past Atami, past Ito, and past Futo.  When you approach Izu Kohgen, you are getting close.  Just past Izu Ogawa there will be Izu Hokkawa.  It is approximately 150 kilometers from Tokyo to Izu Hokkawa.

Look for the big round sign on the left hand side of the road that says Izu Hokkawa Onsen.  Veer left, taking the small road down the hill.  You will go past Izu Hokkawa Onsen and a couple of other onsen resorts.  You will see a building that says Aqua Port Izu.  Just past that is Kenny's House.

In the morning, it takes anywhere from 2 to 4 hours depending on the traffic.  Most people usually leave Tokyo at 5-6 am and arrive around 9 or 9:30.  In the summer, allow an extra 1 to 2 hours extra due to heavy traffic both ways.  In August, the peak season for beachgoers, a return trip of several hours more  is not uncommon!

Tolls:

Shuto Expressway 700
Tomei - Atsugi 1,250
Hiratsuka 350
Odawara 350
Ishibashi 200
Manazuru 310
Atami 250 (Can buy round trip toll ticket for 480)

Total 2,710 One way / 5,400 round trip

Return to Mar Scuba home
